The Last Stand 2 – Fighting For Your Life

Posted by Dustin On August - 2 - 2009

Braaiinnnsssss. I think it’s a well known fact that one day zombies will rise and humanity will be left to fend for itself against the massive onslaught that will ensue. Or at least that’s what countless movies and video games tell us. People have a fetish for all things undead destroying humanity, and for good reason, it is extremely fun to act out. The Last Stand 2 is an impressive flash game in which you set up barricades and traps while shooting, hacking, or blowing up the scourge of the non-living zombies while maintaining a rather clever survivability aspect to it.

Sound – Rating: 7/10

The sound in The Last Stand 2 fits, it’s nothing spectacular but its also not something the creators took too much time on. You have the typical gun sounds, explosions and that horror genre music. Again, nothing amazing, but it’s not bad.

Graphics – Rating: 10/10

When you think flash games, you imagine fat lines bright colors and something of a messy cartoon. The Last Stand 2 proves that graphics can be done well through a flash platform, with looks that could pass as a PlayStation game. If there is one thing this zombie game stands out among the rest for is it’s top notch graphics.

Game Play – Rating: 9/10

This is where The Last Stand 2 really shines for me personally. Anyone who is a fan of horror survivors will love this zombie game. The system is rather simple, but in a way where anything more complicated would only ruin the game. Basically, the game takes you through 40 nights of zombie attacks. If you successfully survive the night, that lets you spend all day preparing for the next night, which involves splitting up your time with searching buildings, repairing barricades, or traveling to a different town. While searching the town you can find survivors to help you fight off the zombies at night, weapons to equip yourself and the other survivors, traps to use, or supplies which allow you to travel to other towns. While repairing barricades will help defend against the zombie horde, and traveling to new towns allows you  more places to search.

The actual fighting isn’t anything extraordinary, but watching all your preparations and using a little strategy, it gives you a feeling of accomplishment that you crave from a survivor game. The only reason this didn’t get a 10/10 was for the simple fact that the traps were a little useless and had some issues.

Re-Playability – Rating: 9/10

Yet another very strong point in this game, developing new strategies, taking new routes. One play through isn’t enough, The Last Stand 2 will have you playing it over and over again.

Difficulty – Rating: 10/10

And Finally, Difficulty. Ten points go in this category and for good reason. The Last Stand 2 offers a very strategical challenge in preparation as well as enacting that strategy during the fights. You have to think ahead and plan if you expect to beat it, and it’s no easy task. With fellow survivors dying and some bad luck searches, some wrenches can be thrown in your plans offering a challenge to even the best of gamers. Alas, a game being flat out hard isn’t always good, but when it does it in a way which leaves you wanting to play more without breaking a few keyboards, that is when you know you have something golden.

Overall – Rating: 9/10

Out of all the Zombie Games out there, this is one of the better ones. The system it utilizes is simple, fun and strategic, you couldn’t ask for more from a flash game. If not for a couple very short, shortcomings, it would have scored 10 for 10 easily. This is definitely a game I would recommend to friends, and I do recommend that you give it a try as well.
