There are a lot of mods (or “custom maps”) available for Starcraft 2, and a lot of them can be quite fun. But most of them have a feeling of amateurism and a lack of polish that fails to allow them to take full advantage of the mechanics they put into play – however innovative those mechanics may be. Smashcraft is a mod that gained popularity the other day, when popular Starcraft 2 caster TotalBiscuit put up a 42-minute video of... Read→

iOS Review – Game Dev Story

Posted by Connor on November - 8 - 2010

Game Dev Story is exactly what it sounds like. But the simple presentation is highly deceiving — this game has got a lot going for it, and is one of the most addictive iOS games I’ve ever played. You start off a humble game development company, with four employees (not counting your secretary) and low review scores. But as you progress, you hire more talented individuals, level up the employees you’ve already got, and unlock many... Read→

Indie Game Review – VVVVVV

Posted by Connor on October - 25 - 2010

When I first bought VVVVVV, I was a bit skeptical. I had enjoyed the demo (which is free to play on Kongregate, or to download on Steam), but I couldn’t see the lasting appeal. However, it was only $5, and I’d heard so many good things, so I decided to buy it. I’m so happy that I was wrong about that “lasting appeal” thing. One of my favourite things in VVVVVV is the level design — every screen makes you think... Read→

Star Wars Fans Rejoice For Steam’s LucasArts Week

Posted by Connor on September - 13 - 2010

Being a huge Star Wars fan myself, stuff like this makes my ears perk right on up. This week on Steam, every day we’ll see a new LucasArts game go on sale. (Today, Monday, it’s The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition. It’s only $7.50. Sweet.) While I wholeheartedly recommend you pick up The Force Unleashed, as it is one of my favourite Star Wars games of all time (such a great story), make sure your computer can run it first.... Read→

All Minecraft players should get an update next time they launch their client. I love good developers, and Notch is one of the best… This week’s update brings us a much better multiplayer experience, as well as some other stuff. But let’s talk about the multiplayer first. This update fixed many problems that people were having, such as the fact that furnaces wouldn’t work without a workaround (and even then they were buggy),... Read→

Indie Games To Check Out

Posted by Connor on August - 14 - 2010

The indie gaming scene is constantly improving. More and more devs keep coming into the field with easy distribution networks such as Steam available for even the smallest of developers (and even with a section dedicated to indie games). I’m personally a big fan of indie games… They may not be as flashy as big-name games, but they have a careful attention to detail that’s hard to beat, and some of them are incredibly cheap and fun. There’s... Read→

Machinarium is an inventive indie click-and-point adventure game that’s gathered a good bit of hype due to its stylish art, fantastic atmosphere, and clever puzzle elements. It’s won several awards, including being Kotaku’s runner-up for “PC Game of the Year” in 2009. Unfortunately, it’s also suffered severe piracy, due to it’s DRM-less nature. I respect the hell out of the Machinarium developers for going... Read→

Starcraft 2 Released To Mac User Animosity

Posted by Connor on July - 27 - 2010

Starcraft 2 is one of the most anticipated videogames that I’ve ever seen. Undoubtedly the most widely-anticipated RTS release in years, if not ever. It’s been twelve years since the original Starcraft, and even that game is still kicking in online communities all over the world. Today, Blizzard released Starcraft 2 to the public. A beta had been going on for some months beforehand, and now it has been officially released for all to purchase... Read→

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Released to Wide Acclaim

Posted by Connor on May - 23 - 2010

Today, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (sequel to the insanely popular 2007 Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii) hit American shelves today, and has since been met with wide critical acclaim, garnering perfect scores nearly across the board. It currently holds a 97/100 on Metacritic. (Metacritic is a website that aggregates reviews for movies, music, TV shows, and, of course, games, and gives an average score based on a quantity of reviews.) This is the highest... Read→

Sequel to Little Big Planet Confirmed!

Posted by Kraven on May - 10 - 2010

One month ago, it looked like composer Christopher Leary confirmed the fact that the developer of Little Big Planet was gearing up towards creating a sequel to Sony’s most successful franchise for the Play station 3. This confirmation was contradicted by the immediate statements from an Media Molecule official, stating that creating a sequel to the game would be one of the most counterproductive actions one could take. It seems the developer... Read→
