The Playstation Network is an awesome platform for developers to get their games to the masses. The equivalent to the Xbox Live Marketplace, it has a wide variety of games, as well as other goodies. We’re going to focus on the games, though, and I’m here to tell you about the best of the rest.
There are lots of games to choose from, but you don’t want your money going to waste… I’ve tried a good bit of Playstation Network games, and I’m here to tell you about my top three favorites to date. These are all definitely worth checking out.
Battlefield 1943
Battlefield 1943 is a downloadable online first-person shooter. No, wait — Don’t go away yet! It’s actually pretty awesome!
I can’t say I expected a whole lot at first, but I was greeted with very nice visuals for a downloadable game coupled with amazing gameplay and tons of replay value. Battlefield 1943 feels like a game that you’d have to go to the store to buy, but you don’t, and it only costs $15. (I got it for like, $10.50, though. They had an awesome deal going on.)
It’s got two game modes… One that focuses on flying around in a plane, destroying other planes, and one that focuses on capturing points throughout the map to win the match. The latter is the most popular, and I love it. You can use three different kinds of vehicles (boats, jeeps, and airplanes) to defeat the other team. It’s constant action, if you’re in the right part of the map (of which there are three, and they’re pretty huge).
It’s well worth every penny, and has provided me with hours of endless entertainment.
Pixeljunk Shooter
Pixeljunk Shooter is a 2D shooter with a special twist. Elements. With water, lava, and others, you make your way through each level by figuring out how to combine the elements and shoot your way to the end. You collect diamonds on the way to unlock boss battles to get to the next set of levels, and you save abandoned crew members along the way. The story is actually pieced together by them, as some of them fill you in on what’s going on.
The story’s not great, but the gameplay more than makes up for it. With simple controls and fitting graphics, making your way from beginning to end is incredibly enjoyable, and sometimes very satisfying when you complete some of the puzzles.
This game will cost you $10, and it’s some of the easiest $10 to let go of.
Super Stardust HD
Super Stardust HD is a dual-stick shooter reminiscent of Geometry Wars on the Xbox 360. I am a huge fan of dual-stick shooters, so this is one game that I really enjoy.
You have different types of weapons for different types of rocks, adding a little variety to the game. The graphics are really nice, and everything is a lot of fun to look at.
There are several different game modes, all adding a little something that the others don’t have, and giving you some choice. All in all, this is a great game that’s definitely worth the money, especially if you have a history with dual-stick shooters.
That’s just a taste… I’ll make some more posts in the future regarding PSN titles, so keep an eye out. There’s always something new and interesting making its way into the Playstation Store, and I’ll keep you updated with the latest and greatest.

> … and has provided me with hours of endless entertainment. uh, not to be pedantic, but how can you have "hours" of "endless" entertainment? But yes, I second Pixel junk Shooter, that game was a lot of fun. I’d also nominate Puzzle Quest, which I just recently discovered and which has been providing me with hours of endless entertainment.
