Apple has a rumored tablet computer coming up (hopefully to be announced at their January 27th event), and reports are coming in that it may be marketed as a gaming device, at least partially.
Apple has been edging their way into the gaming industry via the iPhone and iPod touch devices, due to the App Store’s many quality games from third-party developers. They’re cheap and they’re fun. And it looks like Apple might be shooting for the same thing with their upcoming tablet device.
The report comes from The Wall Street Journal. The report says
Apple is also working with video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. to show off the tablet’s game capabilities, according to one person familiar with the matter.
While it is still a rumor and cannot be trusted completely, it sure is a tasty rumor, and one that is really believable. Apple has seen much success with the App Store, specifically the games for sale within, and they have touted the iPod touch as a gaming device on more than one occasion. It makes sense that an upcoming, larger multitouch device would boast a repertoire of games, and they seem to be trying to get a couple of decent launch titles.
It has also been rumored that Apple has asked some iPhone developers to make their games able to be upscaled without losing any quality. This means that they could be displayed on a higher-resolution screen and look the same… Could the App Store and all of its preexisting games built for hand-held devices also be coming to Apple’s upcoming tablet? I don’t see why not.
If any more news surfaces on this, or it turns out to be the truth, it will be covered further on this here blog. Keep an eye out for Apple’s event on the 27th… The invitations sent out to popular tech blogs say “Come see our latest creation.” I cannot wait.
