Gamer Blast

Video Game Community, News, Reviews, Trailers, and much more

Archive for September, 2010

Today, I started a subreddit (somewhat of a forum, little community, or category on Reddit) called the Indie Gaming Club. The idea is that, every week, we choose an indie game to play, and throughout the week we all discuss that game, leading to a review thread at the end of the week for everybody to sum up their opinions and place a number on how much they enjoyed the game. You see, it works sort of like a book club, except with videogames, so it’s... Read→

PS3 Homebrew Taking Off

Posted by Connor on September - 26 - 2010

The Playstation 3 has long been the unhackable console of the current generation, with the Xbox 360 and the Wii being modded from early on. However, ever since a jailbreaking utility was released roughly a month ago (and then went open-source so you can jailbreak with all sorts of devices, including different phones and even calculators), the homebrew community has taken off, adding more functionality to the console in a way that can only be described... Read→

PC Game Digital Sales Surpass Physical Copies

Posted by Connor on September - 20 - 2010

NPD released the results of a survey today, wherein we are able to learn trends in the acquisitioning of video games for the PC. The results were somewhat of a big shock to me — it’s something I’ve known will happen in the future, I just didn’t think we were already at this point. According to their survey (emphasis on survey — they’re not using actual sales statistics, but were able to survey a very wide range... Read→

Skylands for Minecraft is a custom-built Minecraft world that is comprised of islands floating in the sky. It has been carefully crafted, and is more of an “explore and complete things” than a “build stuff” kind of world. You start off in front of a wooden house. Upon entering, you’ll be confronted with a sign that says “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take these!” above a wooden chest. Inside said chest,... Read→

Minecraft Video Review

Posted by Connor on September - 13 - 2010

Here’s our video review for the very much loved Minecraft. This is something that’s much easier to present as a video rather than text, so I’ll leave the review at that. If you want to read an overview of it that I typed last week, you can do that, too, but that wasn’t written with reviewing it in mind, and it’s not as detailed. Now, between the time I recorded the audio for this and the time I finalized the editing,... Read→

Star Wars Fans Rejoice For Steam’s LucasArts Week

Posted by Connor on September - 13 - 2010

Being a huge Star Wars fan myself, stuff like this makes my ears perk right on up. This week on Steam, every day we’ll see a new LucasArts game go on sale. (Today, Monday, it’s The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition. It’s only $7.50. Sweet.) While I wholeheartedly recommend you pick up The Force Unleashed, as it is one of my favourite Star Wars games of all time (such a great story), make sure your computer can run it first.... Read→

All Minecraft players should get an update next time they launch their client. I love good developers, and Notch is one of the best… This week’s update brings us a much better multiplayer experience, as well as some other stuff. But let’s talk about the multiplayer first. This update fixed many problems that people were having, such as the fact that furnaces wouldn’t work without a workaround (and even then they were buggy),... Read→

Amnesia: The Dark Descent Demo – Nightmare Fuel

Posted by Connor on September - 6 - 2010

I’m a big fan of Frictional Games ever since I got their previous horror title Penumbra: Overture in the Humble Indie Bundle, and so when a demo for their upcoming Amnesia: The Dark Descent hit Steam, I knew I had to get it. I finally decided to man up and play it last night. See, I don’t do incredibly well with horror games… I tense up and get scared too easily. But Frictional Games’ titles have such amazing depth and such... Read→
